Speaking in his double capacity as Mayor of Geneva and President of the Geneva Cities Hub (GCH), Mr. Sami Kanaan participated in the annual retreat of the UCLG. He underlined the need to connect better the local and regional governments to international community.
He also mentioned that health, human rights (Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council), digitization and information society, humanitarian issues, and of course the newly created Forum of Mayors, where Mayors can express themselves directly in dialogue with States, represent some of the priorities on which the GCH is working.
“There is a need to get States to understand and agree that LRGs should have some kind of status to participate in the work of the United Nations”, he concluded. This is indeed one of the main priorities which Geneva Cities Hub will concentrate at in the coming months
