LAUNCHING A RESEARCH PROJECT ON THE IMPLEMENTATION BY AND IN CITIES OF THE RIGHT TO ADEQUATE HOUSING

Description

The GCH launches a research project on the implementation by and in cities of recommendations on the right to adequate housing stemming from the UN human rights system. In doing so, the project seeks to highlight good practices and challenges that can be drawn from these experiences.

The research project will have a close look at recommendations made in the framework of the Universal Periodic Review, by Special Procedures (with a particular focus on the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, the Special Rapporteur on the right to physical and mental health, on the environment and any other relevant Special procedures), as well as the United Nations Treaty Bodies (with a particular focus on the Committee on the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights). While recommendations from the UN Human Rights System are addressed to States, it will be interesting to examine whether some of them target cities more specifically.

Depending on the results of the research, the Geneva Cities Hub could then approach relevant international organizations and interested States, cities and city networks to participate in an event to present the results of the research project.

We are happy to welcome Marie Boyenval, a Geneva Academy student enrolled in the LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. Her participation in this research, together with the GCH team, forms part of an internship integrated into this programme.
