On 28 May 2024, during the ITU WSIS High-level events the Global Cities Hub and WeGO will organize the Smart City Leaders’ Talks in Geneva. The event aims to discuss the main issues of people-centered and climate-resilient smart city development and the necessary future framework to channel the global multistakeholder discussion on this crucial topic.

Cities are among the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change. Therefore, they have a key role in addressing this global challenge. Much depends on how they are planned, built and, use energy to enable people to live, move and thrive. As a result, many cities, local and regional governments (LRGs) and their networks have mobilized to contribute positively to the objectives of the Paris Agreements.

The side event will be held in the margins of the 48th session of the Human Rights Council and of the SDG11 day co-organised by the Geneva Cities Hub and UNECE. It will also be held in the margins of the UNECE Ministerial meeting on housing which will support the regional exchange of experiences and good practices for promoting access to affordable, adequate and resilient housing in liveable cities as part of States’ response and recovery plans to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The theme of the event is Affordable housing & sustainable urban development in a world marked by Covid-19 and climate change. The theme corresponds to the theme of the 2021 UNECE Ministerial Meeting on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management “Affordable, adequate, and resilient housing in liveable cities, including cities which face extreme weather conditions”.
